Collection / Painting

The Städel Museum has in its holdings some 2,900 paintings dating from the fourteenth century to the present, among them Jan van Eyck’s famous Lucca Madonna, Sandro Botticelli’s enigmatic Ideal Portrait of a Lady, the contemplative Geographer by Jan Vermeer van Delft, the world-famous portrait of Goethe by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, Franz Marc’s popular Dog Lying in the Snow and Gerhard Richter’s Large Curtain.

Owing to the substantial number of works in the collection, only a selection can be placed on permanent display at any given time. It is therefore possible that a work which is presented on the website is not on view in the museum.
