This panel belongs to an altar probably executed by a Bavarian painter in Italy. It is with compositional impetuosity and an obvious predilection for narrative that the artist envisions the Holy Family resting on their flight to Egypt: The figures reach for the fruits of the fig tree, the donkey stretches its neck towards the miraculously appearing spring. Trained in the period around 1400, the painter absorbed early Netherlandish influences, which swept through his imagery like a hurricane. It was likewise from the Netherlands that he presumably brought the idea of decorating the reverse side of the panel with a trompe l’oeil in the form of a marble panel in a sandstone frame.
