The works of the celebrated Florentine Dominican friar Fra Angelico (before 1399–1455) radiate a quality decidedly magical. The beauty and spiritual substance of his almost exclusively religious themes have consistently reaped profound admiration. The precious, copiously gilded depiction of the Madonna and Child Enthroned, Surrounded by Angels of the early 1420s was presumably intended as an individual devotional image for an unknown patron, undoubtedly a highly cultivated connoisseur.
