This triptych of the Crucifixion came to Frankfurt at the beginning of the 16th century. The patron family Humbracht had direct business contacts with Antwerp, where the anonymous artist lived. Still, he is known as the Master of Frankfurt because the numer of works attributed to him in the German city. Following the practice of time, the male members of the family are depicted on the left, along with St. Nicholas, the father's patron saint. His wife and daughters are shown on the right, under the protection of St. Margaret.
