The landscapes of Fosset painted by the Belgian Symbolist Khnopff in various periods of his life are generally deserted. The Gamekeeper is one of the few views of the Ardennes village that includes a figure. The body of the man is projected onto the landscape in strict profile. He does not cast a shadow but looks as if he had been cut out and pasted onto a field of colour with no attempt at perspective. Khnopff’s idiosyncratic approach regarding the angle and proximity of view is evident in this painting. By choosing a slightly aerial perspective and a high horizon, the artist largely excludes the sky from the painting and produces a well thought-out and subtly felt landscape.
