Like Klein, the Argentine-Italian artist Lucio Fontana (1899–1968) likewise immersed a great number of his canvases in monochrome colouration. In his concept for opening space, however, he went a decisive step further: with a sharp razor he cut slits into the surface in order to create the so-called spatial expectation, which dissolves the boundaries of the actual painting.
