Annette repeatedly sat as a model for her husband when he wished to develop his basic theme in continual variations: the isolation, loneliness, and desolation of humanity. It was the artist’s firm belief that artistic representation can only approximate reality. Thus, with the rough style of painting exhibited by this work, the figure seems to dissolve rather than acquire solidity. At the same time, however, the weaving of the body into the diffuse surrounding space heightens the work’s suggestive force. The expression of existential despair in Giacometti’s work was the subject of vivid and powerful interpretations by the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre.
