The Beuys pupil Blinky Palermo (1943–77), who died long before his time, used industrially dyed and mechanically sewn lengths of cloth in blue and green to produce his Untitled (Fabric Painting). He rejected the individual painterly gesture, instead endowing the cloth and its colour with a force entirely its own. His path led him away from the material and towards the immaterial; at the same time, it was no coincidence that his works reflect the colours and proportions of landscape.
