The picture plane is spanned by a semicircular arc in the radius of the arm that wields the brush. This linear gesture stands in contrast to the richly differentiated values of the painting. The artist achieves this impasto effect by painting, laying on with a palette knife, pouring, scratching, and smearing, all of which lends the work its relief-like, almost geological quality. This leading exponent of so-called informal painting treats paint as a raw material, transforming it into a structure that constitutes the aesthetic quality of his art. Despite its large size, Schumacher’s painting is held together by a compositional unity that has become a hallmark of his work.
