The Belgian painter James Ensor – also known as the “painter of masks” from a pictorial motif that runs throughout his entire oeuvre – probably chose his niece, Alexandra, as the subject for this portrait. The alternative title, Communion, which does not originate with the artist, refers to the first communion, although the sacramental occasion stands in sharp contrast to the subject’s frozen face and the grimaces and masks that surround her. Far from reality of any kind, this Symbolist work presents a ghostly and ambiguous vision.
