zur  Biographie

Macke founded the expressionist artists’ group “Der Blaue Reiter” in 1911 together with Wassily Kandinsky, Alfred Kubin, and Franz Marc. He executed this painting of the toys belonging to his son Walter – born in 1910 – in 1912, two years before he fell in World War I. It is one of a long series of still lifes produced by the artist under the influence of Matisse. The abstract, two-dimensional treatment of the pictorial forms and the dominance of large fields of colour outlined in black create a demonstratively ornamental effect. The combination of motion and rest is striking; while the simplified forms of the animals and objects are motionless, the colour adds dynamism.
