ERNST LUDWIG KIRCHNER

Nude Girl

ca. 1912/19

Painted wood
Inv. No. SGP 206

63 cm

zur  Biographie

The identity of the model for this carved wooden statuette by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner cannot be determined with certainty. The figure seems to have its painted counterpart in the Dresden

Nude with Hat. But the expressive painted head displays the features of Erna Schilling, the artist’s life companion. Nor does it seem to have been the artist’s intention to facilitate clear identification, given the manner in which he has treated the material. Instead of leaving the traces of the carving process visible, as might be expected of an artist who had once been a member of “Die Brücke”, Kirchner covered the surface with a thick coat of ivory paint to produce an effect of pure illusion.
