REMBRANDT HARMENSZ. VAN RIJN
Christ before the People (Ecce Homo)
1655
Dry-point
Inv. No. 8995
35.2 × 45.5 cm
This engraving is one of the monumental late masterpieces of Rembrandt’s graphic work. It depicts the moment when Pilate points at the bound Jesus asking the people whether he shall be released. The large plate is executed exclusively in the difficult but particularly impressive „dry-point“ technique, i.e. engraved directly on the copper plate. In the reworked state reproduced here Rembrandt added two sinister dark apertures where before had still stood spectators.
