Rembrandt was not only the most important Dutch painter of the seventeenth century; he also produced unsurpassed masterworks in the printmaking technique of etching. In this work of 1648 he depicts himself as a serious artist deeply engrossed in his work, dressed in a cloak and hat as he was in real life when working in his studio. The finest variations in tone model his face, which glows, reclaimed from the darkness by the light flooding the scene. The brightly lit wristband adds a lively, contrasting accent.
