MORE ACQUISITIONS 2010 (SELECTION)

In 2010, as the Städel Museum was undergoing expansion, the collection itself also grew through the addition of some important works. A large number of outstanding purchases were made by the Städelscher Museums-Verein and the Städelkomitee 21. Jahrhundert, the latter playing the major role in acquiring works of contemporary art. Using funds from the Städelscher Museums-Verein and the Städelkomitee 21. Jahrhundert, around thirty-five outstanding works were purchased for the collection. The spectrum ranges from early abstract-geometrical tendencies in post-war European art – as found in the works of François Morellet (Peinture [No 55003], 1955) or Adolf Fleischmann (Composition #81 Lyric-Dramatic Composition, 1956) – to German painting of the sixties and seventies and extended concepts of the image as exemplified by the works of Tamara Grcic (Falten, N.Y.C., 1997). Another new addition comes from Leni Hoffmann who developed the site-specific wall work sid in the context of her exhibition "a whiter shade of pale”. This work will be re-created for the opening of the Städel Museum extension, and transferred to the Städel Museum’s ownership as a gift from the Schering Stiftung.

In addition, the Städel Museum collection was once again enriched in 2010 by generous gifts from artists and collectors. Thus for example Eberhard Havekost’s Jungle I (2009) entered the collection as a gift from the artist and Galerie Gebr. Lehmann. Other additions to the collection included Wolf Vostell’s Luftpumpen-Museum (1972), donated to the Städel by Petra and Helmut Rumbler, and two key works by the German painter Arno Rink that were part of a donation from Fritz and Waltraud Mayer. Thanks to a generous gift from the art collector Dr. Dorette Hildebrand-Staab, the Frankfurt Städel Museum acquired four works of great significance in the history of contemporary German art. Dr Hildebrand-Staab donated three important works by the painter
Georg Baselitz, among them the 1963 painting Oberon – a work that holds a key position both in the artist’s oeuvre and in the development of post-war German painting – and Eugen Schönebeck’s Bildnis L. T. (Trotzki) (1966), one of the few paintings executed by this artist.

In the area of classical modern art, the Städel made two important acquisitions: Karl Hubbuch’s Marianne vor dem Spiegel (1932–33) and Wilhelm August Theodor Steinhausen’s Wolke of 1909 have been added to the holdings.

Immediately before Christmas, the Städel was able to announce another particularly gratifying acquisition:
Barbara and Eduard Beaucamp of Frankfurt donated the Virgin and Child (ca. 1621/22) by Guercino, one of the foremost painters of the Italian Baroque. This important new arrival fills a further gap in the museum’s collection of Old Masters, and is an excellent companion piece to Dirck van Baburen’s Young Man Singing, acquired in 2007.

Very welcome additions to the Städel’s Department of Prints and Drawings are two large workgroups from among the drawings of Karl Bohrmann, a former teacher at the Städelschule – a generous gift from Ingrid and Werner Welle. Further gifts extend the Städel’s holdings of works by Hans Thoma, Hans Meid, Horst Janssen and David Hockney as well as post-war Italian prints. Others, like the drawings by the Berlin realist Peter Sorge, open up new perspectives. In the area of American prints, a collection assembled over a number of years with the support of the Heinz und Gisela Friederichs Stiftung, works by Vija Celmins, Robert Longo and James Welling were acquired. The purchase of a series of prints by the British artist Tacita Dean was made possible by the Dagmar-Westberg-Stiftung. Funds from the Ludwig-Pfungst-Museums-Stiftung were used in 2010 to purchase prints by the contemporary artists Cornelius Völker and Ugo Rondinone.

In the context of its programme to foster the arts, the Commerzbank placed works by such renowned artists as Andy Warhol (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1982), Henri Laurens (La grande Baigneuse, 1947), Max Beckmann (Mainufer, 1925), Paul Klee (Ohne Titel [Zeichen für Wachstum], ca. 1938) and László Moholy-Nagy (Kestner Portfolio 6, 1923) at the Städel Museum’s disposal in 2010 in the form of permanent loans. These works significantly supplement the Städel’s presentation of the development of classical modern art, and as a result of the partnership between the Städel and the Commerzbank they are now being made permanently accessible to the public.
