From 1855 received drawing instruction from Stanislas Gorin in Bordeaux. In 1864 studied with Jean-Léon Gèrôme in Paris. Learned the techniques of copper engraving and lithography under Rodolphe Bresdin. Published his first album of lithographs Dans le Rêve in 1879.
