From 1855 received drawing instruction from Stanislas Gorin in Bordeaux. In 1864 studied with Jean-Léon Gèrôme in Paris. Learned the techniques of copper engraving and lithography under Rodolphe Bresdin. Published his first album of lithographs, Dans le Rêve, in 1879. Until 1890 worked almost exclusively as a graphics artist, but then increasingly used pastels and oils. Friendships with Symbolist artists, musicians and poets, among them Stéphane Mallarmé.
