CASPAR DAVID FRIEDRICH
Woman with Cobweb amid Bare Trees (Melancholy)
17 × 11.9 cm
This woodcut, although of modest size, is one of the major German prints of the 19th century. Underlying the depiction is a meditation on the transience of life and man’s being subject to the laws of nature, thoughts that the Romantic Friedrich addressed time and again, also in his painting. The female figure here is resting her head on her hand, her face is in shadow, all of which refer back to Dürer’s famous copper plate engraving, Melancholia.
