Städel Paintings of the Fourteenth to Twenty-First Centuries
28 October 2010
This exhibition offers the unique opportunity to experience familiar works in a new context, and thus to break old viewing habits. The usual separation according to epochs and regions will be abandoned and replaced by a chronologically oriented presentation. Thanks to the special structure of the Städel Museum collection, with superb works of all periods from the Middle Ages to the present, an art-historical timeline will evolve. Full of fascinating juxtapositions, it will tell the story of Occidental painting from a whole new perspective. For the Städel Museum, the show is a means of presenting works from its holdings in unusual adjacencies despite the temporary closing of its exhibition halls.
