GIFTS MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR WORKS OF ART TO BECOME FREELY ACCESSIBLE. EVERY GIFT THEREFORE REPRESENTS A CULTURAL GAIN FOR THE ENTIRE POPULATION.
"This immensely generous gift has enabled a long-cherished dream to be fulfilled. Works of such enormous art-historical importance would not be obtainable on the open art market and would be beyond the Städel Museum’s means.”
Max Hollein, Director, on the occasion of a gift made in January 2011
"These outstanding works […] are going to the place where they are most accessible to a wider public: the museum.”
Luminita Sabau, former director of the DZ BANK art collection
About a third of the works on permanent display in the Städel were received as gifts. Through acts of generosity, individuals, families and institutions have contributed to the steady growth of the Städel Museum’s collection. In times of ever-diminishing purchasing budgets and with prices on the art market rising by leaps and bounds, gifts will continue to play an important role in the future.
