Background Information

How does the Städel Museum take the interests of MuseumsuferCard holders into account?

MuseumsuferCard holders can visit 2/3 of the 2022 special exhibition programme at the Städel Museum free of charge. First and foremost in our considerations was a justifiable new regulation of the MuseumsuferCard. For this reason, we have decided to continue to grant MuseumsuferCard holders free admission to the Städel Museum’s permanent collection (permanent exhibition) as well as to temporary special exhibitions from the museum’s holdings. Major special exhibitions with international loans such as “GUIDO RENI. The Divine” (11/23/2022–3/5/2023) are excluded from this offer.

How does the Städel Museum benefit financially from this change in validity?

It is above all our visitors who benefit. With their admission fee, they make an important contribution to the financing and maintenance of the Städel Museum. This is the only way we can continue to be one of the most successful art museums in Germany – with high-quality museum work, a varied, world-renowned exhibition programme, and active and contemporary art mediation. What few people know is that the Städel Museum is one of the oldest private museum foundations in Germany and to a large extent a citizen’s museum – with a high self-financing ratio of over 80%. This requires economically responsible thinking and acting. And: It is not only because of the coronavirus pandemic that museums worldwide are facing great challenges and are required to review their financing models in particular. As a world-class museum, the Städel is also obliged to keep its financing sustainable.

Is the Städel Museum publicly funded?

Like other Frankfurt museums, the Städel Museum preserves a municipal collection which is administered by the Städel Museum as a municipal gallery. For this reason, the Städel Museum has received funding for its museum work from the City of Frankfurt am Main and the State of Hesse that has remained constant for the past twelve years and currently corresponds to approximately 19% of the total budget. Only a partial amount of the MuseumsuferCard (and the MuseumsuferTicket) benefits the museum. As a citizen’s museum, it is important for us to make this fact transparent to our visitors.

At the same time, however, the Städel Museum’s cultural offerings, which are unique in Germany, are a central and outstanding locational factor for the city and the region, which must be further promoted, especially against the backdrop of the challenges facing society as a whole due to the coronavirus pandemic. This is why permanent and solid financing based on a broad commitment is so important. This means that, in addition to the admission fees and income from the museum shop generated by our visitors, the work of the Städel Museum is also supported by numerous committed sponsors such as the Städelscher Museums-Verein, companies, foundations, and private individuals.

What measures does the Städel Museum implement to promote cultural participation?

The Städel Museum is a museum for everyone. This is our social mandate. In the area of education and mediation work, we demonstrate in an exemplary way how cultural participation can succeed in our society. For years, we have successfully designed and implemented numerous offers, be it the comprehensive “Education Week”, the (German-language) “ausKUNSTbildung” format established to promote young people from different cultural circles and social milieus, as well as the numerous tours for children and families, not to mention the free digital offers such as our podcasts, games, and Digitorials®.

For all these offers, which we want to make even better, we receive a great deal of encouragement from our visitors – from parents, their children, grandparents, but also from teachers and educators from day-care centres and kindergartens. In this spirit, and against the background that many children and young people were excluded from cultural education due to the school and museum closures during the pandemic, we will continue to make our contribution to more cultural participation for the next generation.

What discounts and special offers does the Städel Museum offer for people on low incomes / for families / for children and young people?

Children under the age of twelve are granted free admission to the Städel Museum. Families can book timed tickets for the accompanying adults in the online shop, and the (accompanying) children and young people under the age of eighteen receive free tickets for immediate admission at the ticket counter. This offer is also available for the entire family at the ticket counter. Furthermore, families with a Frankfurt-Pass or Kulturpass will receive discounted tickets at the ticket counter. Valid proof of eligibility together with a valid photo ID must be presented.

What are the advantages of being a member of the Städelscher Museums-Verein e.V.?

The advantages are self-evident, because all members of the Städelverein enjoy free admission all year round and preferential admission to all special exhibitions and collections of the Städel Museum and Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung. Members can visit the museums at any time without a timed ticket reservation. The Städelverein is a non-profit organisation; with their membership, members directly support the Städel Museum and at the same time contribute to its preservation. In addition, the Städelverein offers a dedicated and tailor-made art and cultural programme. In the monthly newsletter, members receive all the information, dates, and registration options for exclusive tours, Members Day, art events, and other selected educational and mediation formats from the museums. The Städelverein currently has over 9,000 members.
